(Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad alta specializzazione), one of
the most technologically advanced and state-of-the-art medical centers in Italy, managed by UPMC in
partnership with ARNAS Civico Hospital of Palermo and the Ri.MED Foundation.
Under the supervision of the attending physician (service director), the Oncology Fellow (a young, specialized physician) provides care in the diagnostic and therapeutic pathway of outpatients and Day Service and Day Hospital patients. Working with other specialists in cardiothoracic, abdominal, and diagnostic and therapeutic services (i.e., pathology, radiodiagnostics and interventional radiology, endoscopy, nuclear medicine, laboratory medicine and molecular biology, genetics, clinical psychology) area, he/she supports the clinical management of oncology patients at ISMETT, helping to define the most appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic plans of care. Collaborates with American colleagues of the Hillman Cancer Center to manage individual patients with specific issues.
The Oncology Fellow organizes and attends local and international multidisciplinary tumor boards involving specialists from medical, surgical, and diagnostic services. He/she promotes interaction and integration with other community physicians to ensure the completion of the patients’ plan of care (e.g., chemotherapy, radiotherapy), facilitate follow-up of patients already treated at ISMETT, attract new oncology patients at ISMETT (suffering from liver, pancreas, biliary, lung, mediastinum, esophagus, and rare tumors). The Oncology Fellow is responsible for communication between physicians and oncology patients, also with reference to palliative medicine. He/she interacts with colleagues of other UPMC Centers (UPMC Italy, UPMC International, UPMC Pittsburgh) to ensure consistent plans of care, timely implementation of innovative therapies, and quality care.
The Oncology Fellow contributes to the development of clinical and translational research projects,
innovative therapies, publishing research results in peer-reviewed international journals, attracting research funds, and clinical and research networking, especially with UPMC’s institutional partner Ri.MED Foundation.
Requirements:
Preferred qualifications:
• Proven clinical and training experience managing patients with solid tumors.
• Scientific production rated with the H-index.
• English language proficiency CEFR level C1.
Other requisites: Knowledge of main computer applications, high motivation, flexibility, stress management, problem-solving skills, and good interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills, and willingness to face urgent patient care issues, complete the profile.
Workplace: Palermo.
