UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Villa at Maria in Mirabella Eclano (Avellino, Italy) started offering consults and advanced radiotherapy treatments at the end of 2018, and has gradually increased this activity up to the first days of 2019. The Center has received the necessary authorizations and its accreditation process is underway. In line with the goals of the UPMC network, of which it is now part, Villa Maria currently offers state-of-the-art highly effective treatments and care.
This year kicked off successfully for the Region of Campania and its neighboring territories: as announced during the grand opening ceremony in October 2018, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center ar Villa Maria has opened its doors to all patients requiring advanced radiotherapy treatment and care. Expectations are that the services launched in December will be constantly increasing over the next weeks. The Center is becoming a fully-fledged member of the UPMC network. Already integrated in the area of Avellino and Benevento, the Center is the first to offer high quality radiation oncology services to patients from Campania and other regions including Molise, Puglia, Basilicata, and Calabria.
“I am extremely pleased of this project that complements the oncology services offered in this community. The new facility will allow us to ensure cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities to all our patients with a multidisciplinary approach to the disease, which is the only way to improve outcomes for cancer patients,” said Prof. Antonio Febbraro, director of the Oncology Unit of Ospedale Fatebenefratelli, Sacro Cuore di Gesù in Benevento.
“The opening of a UPMC high-tech radiotherapy center in this territory allows to improve the services provided by Villa Maria and integrate them with the ones offered by the other local oncology facilities,” said Prof. PierCarlo Gentile, medical director of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at Villa Maria. “Under the framework of our agreements with Ospedale Fatebenefratelli Sacro Cuore di Gesù of Benevento, we have activated the oncology multidisciplinary outpatient clinics that will provide our patients with new personalized treatment options, conveniently shared by our facilities. There are also other collaborations underway that will allow patients to access the most effective treatment protocols available today without having to leave their homes or, alternatively, traveling only very short distances. In line with our patient-focused commitment, our first “feather is the cap” is the innovative telemedicine service launched at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at Villa Maria. This represents a true innovation because, in case of ultra-specialized medical consults, it will the medical records that will move, not the patients.”
This will strongly benefit patients, in terms of time and costs, but also the health care system that will better use its resources maintaining its standards of care and reducing its waiting lists.
Added Dr. Domenico Covotta, president of Villa Maria: “For over 60 years, Villa Maria has been standing out in this territory for its ability to keep up with the times. In 2000, our facility was the first in this area to purchase an MRI, and today it has accepted the challenge to provide comprehensive care and treatment to cancer patients. With this in mind, we have purchased the most sophisticated equipment for diagnostics (a 128-slice CT scanner and a latest-generation 1.5T MRI system) and mini-invasive surgery (4K laparoscopic technology). After the ambitious project of implementing a Medical Oncology Service whose NHS accreditation process is underway, we have launched an advanced radiotherapy service with UPMC.”
UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at Villa Maria is part of the UPMC oncology network: more than 60 locations in the U.S. and Europe (Irland and Italy) ensuring the highest standard of care to over 110,000 patients each year.
